Social Emotional Learning Lesson Plan for Little Ant and the Butterfly: Respect and Feelings
This lesson plan is a companion resource for the book Little Ant and the Butterfly by S.M.R. Saia. It can be used in the school or homeschool classroom or, less formally, parents can leverage the discussion guide and activity for additional enrichment at home. The main objective of this lesson plan is to help young children make a connection between the way they treat others and how that makes both them and others feel. Additional objectives include:
Identify and describe the behaviors of characters in a book.
Explore diversity and respect through literature.
Understand the core value of respect.
State at least one benefit of treating others with respect.
The bright, colorful, and emotionally expressive illustrations will help to engage students in discussions about self awareness, self management, responsible decision making, relationship skills and social awareness.
This lesson maps to the following Common Core standards: RLK.1, RLK.2, RLK.10, SL.K.1.A, SL.K.1.B, SL.K.2, SL.K.5, SL.K.6
