This lesson plan is a companion resource for the book Little Ant and the Spider by S.M.R. Saia. It can be used in the school or homeschool classroom or, less formally, parents can leverage the discussion guide and activity for additional enrichment at home. The main objective of this lesson plan is to help students identify the qualities of a true friend and learn to recognize when someone is not their friend. Additional objectives include:

• Identify and describe the behaviors of characters in a book.

• Explore the concepts of friendship and peer pressure through literature.

• Recognize that a person’s true character and intentions are revealed through their actions.

• State at least one quality of a genuine friend.

This lesson maps to the following Common Core standards: RLK.1, RLK.2, RLK.10, SL.K.1.A, SL.K.1.B, SL.K.2, SL.K.5, SL.K.6

The bright, colorful, and emotionally expressive illustrations will help to engage students in discussions about self awareness, self management, responsible decision making, relationship skills and social awareness.
